Reducing your carbon footprint doesn’t need to be difficult or painful.
Here are five ways to significantly reduce your footprint — all in less than ten minutes.
The best part? Not only will these changes reduce your carbon emissions, they’ll also enhance your quality of life.
5 tips to lower your carbon footprint right now
1. Fly direct
Take off and landing contribute up to 40% of a flight's total emissions. That means the more times you take off and land to get where you're going, the more emissions you're generating to get there.
By flying direct, you also travel a shorter distance, which reduces the total fuel needed to get to your destination and decreases total carbon dioxide emissions.
2. Choose chicken over beef
Meat is a big part of an American diet and the type of meat you choose matters a lot for your carbon footprint.
Not only is cattle ranching the number one cause of deforestation, but cattle burp methane as part of their digestive process. Methane creates 86 times more global warming than CO2, which means the climate change impact of beef is huge compared to other meat choices, like pork, chicken or fish.
3. Buy durable and repairable items
When you buy new, the primary source of emissions isn't shipping. Most of the carbon emissions associated with that product come from the electricity used in the manufacturing process.
Buying durable products with long life spans — or products that can be repaired instead of thrown away and replaced — reduces your carbon footprint. The longer you can go without buying a replacement item, the smaller your footprint will be. That’s partially because fewer material belongings over your lifetime equals a smaller footprint. Additionally, the longer we put off manufacturing new goods, the lower the emissions for those products will be as the world shifts away from fossil fuels and electricity is increasingly emissions-free.
The lowest impact option of all? Buy second-hand whenever you can!
4. Rent an e-scooter or e-bike
Did you know that an electric bike has even lower emissions than biking yourself?
Electric vehicles — whether they're cars, bikes, or scooters — are 2-3 times more efficient than their conventional counterparts. This is in part because they don't create a lot of waste heat (1).
Electric scooters and bikes are even better, since their electric motors are not also moving a 4,000lb car.
So the next time you're travelling less than a couple of miles, consider an e-scooter or e-bike. They're the ultimate mode in low emissions transport, better for your health, and fun to boot!
5. Convert power plants to renewable energy with Kotoo
The fastest way to reduce your carbon emissions? Subscribe to Kotoo.
Kotoo’s offsets reduce emissions by converting fossil fuel power plants to renewable energy, attacking your emissions at the source.
Most people can eliminate their entire carbon footprint for $12 a month.
Own your own home or know someone that does? We'd love to help them reduce their utility bills and their home's emissions. Here's how.
Your body is about 25% efficient at converting food energy into motion and the same is true for a gasoline car at converting fuel energy to motion. Electric motors on the other hand, are ~90% efficient. Even when taking into account a fossil fuel powerplant to make the electricity, the total system is 40% efficient.
